9. DEFINITION AND USE OF COOKIES
Also called browsing cookies or tracking cookies, cookies are small text files, often encrypted, located in browser directories. They are used to help users navigate websites efficiently and perform certain functions.
Due to their essential role in improving/facilitating site usage or processes, disabling cookies may prevent users from using certain websites.
Website servers set cookies to help authenticate the user when the user logs into a secure area of the website. Login information is stored in a cookie so that the user can enter and exit the website without having to enter the same authentication information repeatedly.
Session cookies are also used by the server to store information about page activities so that the user can easily pick up where they left off on the server's pages. By default, web pages don't really have "memory". Cookies tell the server which pages to show to the user so that the user does not have to remember or start browsing the site again. Cookies act as a sort of “bookmark” on the site. Likewise, cookies can store order information necessary for shopping carts to function, instead of requiring the user to remember all the items they have put in their cart.
Persistent or tracking cookies are also used to store user preferences. Many websites allow the user to customize the presentation of information through the layout or themes of the site. These changes make the site easier to navigate.
We use session cookies as an additional security feature. When our customers log in to our websites and are authenticated by their username and password, a cookie stores their browser identification number. Throughout their session, the session cookie acts as a type of digital signature to identify our client's current session on the web server. The web server will monitor our client's browser number to ensure that we are dealing with our client at all times during the session. We also use session cookies to track our customers' visits to our website. We use this information to determine the type of information our customers are looking for on our website and to improve our website. We use information about the site visited by our customers immediately before our site to evaluate the viability of links to our site that we have created on third party sites.
For our websites to work, our customer's browser must be configured to accept cookies. If a user is concerned about their browser being set to accept cookies when browsing other websites, we recommend that their browser be set to alert them when receiving a cookie. This gives the user the option to accept or reject cookies presented by the web server they are visiting. If in doubt, we suggest contacting the browser programmer to find out how to proceed.
We may also collect information about how the Service is accessed and used (“Usage Data”). This Usage Data may include information such as your computer's Internet Protocol address (e.g., IP address), the pages of our Service that you visit, the time and date of your visit, the time spent on these pages. Usage Data and Cookie Data are generally anonymous technical information. We will not attempt to link this anonymous technical information to personal data unless we have consented to it, we (or our service providers) have detected or reasonably suspect any illegal use of our service or breach of security or if we have a legal obligation or legal right to do so.
10. PROTECTION OF OUR CUSTOMERS’ PERSONAL INFORMATION
We use commercially reasonable efforts to ensure that the personal information we collect is protected against loss and unauthorized access. Access to our customers' personal information is restricted to selected employees and contractors of Boaty. However, we cannot guarantee the confidentiality of information displayed on shipments or shipping labels.
11. STORAGE DURATION OF INFORMATION
We retain our customers' personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purpose for which it was collected and to comply with applicable laws. We do not store customer credit card details in any form. We will also retain usage data for internal analysis purposes. Usage Data is generally retained for a shorter period of time, except when such data is used to strengthen the security or improve the functionality of our Services, or when we are legally required to retain this data for longer periods.
12. LINKS TO OTHER SITES
The Boaty website may provide links to other websites. As a user, you should be aware that operators of linked websites may also collect their customers' personal information (including information generated through the use of cookies) when they link to these sites. We are not responsible for how these third parties collect, use or disclose our customers' personal information. It is therefore important that our customers familiarize themselves with the privacy policies of these third parties before providing them with personal information.
14. CHANGES TO THE PRIVACY POLICY
We reserve the right to modify this privacy policy at any time without notice. The Privacy Policy posted at any time or from time to time through this Website will be deemed to be the Privacy Policy in effect at that time.
